There is plenty of cheer at the Brewers Arms in Malvern - the pub has just received an award for being the Most Improved Pub in Worcestershire. The pub, run by husband and wife team Trevor and Sue Marston for the past three years, has been given the accolade by the Worcester branch of the real ale enthusiasts Camra. Mr Marston said: "I am over the moon. It is good to see people leave the pub happy and winning awards puts the icing on the cake."  more...

Members of a society in Worcestershire have been made joint winners of a national award for community archaeology. The Badsey Society was presented with the Marsh Archaeology Award for its Enclosure Map Project, which studied the development of the parishes of Badsey and Aldington since 1807. As part of the project, two maps were displayed in the village, digitised and put on the internet as part of the countrywide Tithe and Inclosure Map Project.  more...

Hundreds of pounds were raised for charity at an unusual music event at a Worcester pub. The New Chequers pub on Astwood Road held its party in the car park to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support. A total of £750 was raised. "It was a great success," said landlord Graham Phillips.  more...

100 Years Ago, May 30, 1908

THERE was no general celebration of Empire Day in Bromsgrove on Monday beyond a fairly general display of flags. Pupils at the Church of England School assembled in Crown Close where the gates to the playground had been decorated with bunting, flowers and patriotic mottoes.The boys marched past and saluted the Union Flag and were followed by the rest of the school, staff, managers and some parents. Later everyone joined in a hearty rendition of the National Anthem.  more...

50 Years Ago, May 31, 1958

AFTER just six months the Droitwich firm Tropicalisation and Packaging Co had been forced to close. The company, which had gone into to the growing broiler chicken production business, had recently gone into the red to the tune of £6,000. Bosses said this was due to over production nationwide plus a drop in price of 6d per pound.  more...

30 Years Ago, May 26, 1978

THERE was fresh hope for sufferers with the opening of a new pain relief centre within Hill Top Hospital in Bromsgrove. Led by Dr Mukerji, it would deal with all types of intractable pain from neuralgia to cancer by the use of electrical stimulation and injections rather than the traditional method of oral drugs.
