Hagley Gardeners’ Club

The April meeting was an excise in guts, determination and sheer hard work. John Morgan, from Saranacris, held us transfixed with his slides and talk of how he built his terrace garden in Bromsgrove. A mixture of exotics and native plants with a suggested Japanese garden and an unusual roof garden. Today (Wednesday) Jean Draycott will talk about the restoration of Castle Bromwich Hall Gardens. On Saturday, June 14, there will be an outing to Burford and Buscot Park near Letchlade. Non-club members are welcome. At the time of going to press we had a few seats still available. On June 25 there will be a cheese and wine evening at Honeybrook House Cottage in Wolverley where we have the opportunity to wander round this enchanting private garden. April was a special meeting and 75 members and invited guests came to celebrate our 50th anniversary. We met at the Granary Hotel, Shenstone, and enjoyed a wonderful lunch, after which area chairman Sheila Hand treated us to a super demonstration entitled Let's Celebrate. The vote of thanks at the end of the demonstration was given by our area vice-chairman, Andrew Lloyd, then Sheila's arrangements were raffled. There was a good turnout of members and we were delighted to welcome back our former secretary Kathy Jones, who has been recuperating after a serious fall in December. Dates for your diary include our planned visit to Bodenham Vineyard in June, our day at the WI's own college Denman, in August, not to mention the Corbett Group visit to the local cottage garden at Astley Burf on July 24. Congratulations were given to four members who had entered craft and cooking items in the County Spring Rally - Denise Cotterill and Janet Simmonds in the craft card section, Patricia Banthorpe, who submitted a knitted garment, and Beverley Tyler, who baked a cherry cake. Craft coordinator, Sue Longhurst, had set up a table with the entries displayed and we were all invited to sample the cherry cake at refreshment time - thank you Bev, it was delicious.  more...
