100 Years Ago April 25, 1908 Though Easter arrived late this year, the weather during the holidays was of quite a wintry nature. Cold winds and snowstorms have prevailed, making the lot of the visitor, like that of the policeman in the opera, not a happy one. Yet despite the fact that "the meteorological conditions were distinctly uncongenial," as one of our correspondents used to say, a fair number of people came to Evesham on Good Friday and Easter Monday. On the latter day there was a record gate' for an Evesham football match, no less than £24 being taken at the match between Evesham United Astwood Bank in the Bidford League. The takings on the pleasure grounds on Monday night realised about £14, which is only about £4 less than last year, when the weather was delightful.  more...

STUDENTS of The Stage Door Dance Academy at Stoke Prior couldn't do much better. They took 53 dance exams and all passed with great results. Principal, Martina Ponsonby, said since opening in 1994 the school has a 100 per cent success rate in exams. Martina added: "Stage Door Students always give total commitment to their work regardless of the project they are preparing for and have a particularly good track record for dance exam results. Several senior students have gone on to achieve student teacher qualifications and on this occasion there were plenty of glowing reports received from the board examiner. Bromsgrove WI

Our April meeting was opened by Millie who was pleased to announce a further increase in our membership. After the usual business, we welcomed our speaker, Sue Johnson, who gave an interesting talk on her work. She writes novels, also articles and short stories for women's magazines. Having inspired us with her excessive knowledge, we have been given until our June meeting to write a thousand word story entitled Memories. Sue has agreed to judge them, the winner to receive a small prize.  more...

St Catherine’s Blackwell WI

The April meeting was opened by Diane, who welcomed members and two visitors. The minutes from the previous meeting were read out and agreed and then Gladys was thanked for organising our first walk round Bourneheath. The next walk will be a bluebell walk on the evening of May 7, again with the option of a meal after. We have also been invited to go on a bluebell walk the same day in the afternoon by members of Cofton Hackett WI and some members expressed their interest to support both.  more...

Bromsgrove U3A

AT our second April meeting Pat Tansell, Bromsgrove's local librarian, gave an interesting talk on Elijah Walton, a little known Victorian artist, buried in Bromsgrove. Born in Birmingham in 1832, he attended the Royal Academy School in London in 1855. He was encouraged to visit the Alps where he produced mountain views and flower paintings which were published in book form with a text by a friend. From 1873 he was president of Bromsgrove Art School, resigning in 1879 on becoming insolvent. He died in 1880.  more...
