West Malvern

ANOTHER dramatic chapter (more fully reported elsewhere in today's Malvern Gazette) was written in the chequered history of number 193 West Malvern Road on Sunday night when a fire in the storeroom of Charrington Interiors was spotted by neighbour Lukasz Zolc, who alerted owner, Pete Westmacott, who was sleeping in the flat above and helped him to safety. The fire was quickly controlled by the fire brigade and damage to the property and contents was fortunately limited. The property has had a remarkable number of uses over the years, including taxi office, garage, antique business, hairdressing salon, beauty parlour and now specialist flooring business. John Bennett, whose father ran a local taxi service there before World War Two and who was brought up as a child over the shop has a wonderful tale of a family cat which came home with its tale practically severed in some accident. The cat retreated into the airing cupboard and would not come out for several days, eventually emerging with its tail perfectly healed up!  more...
