Man in series of appalling attacks

A LANDSCAPE gardener punched a bus driver and broke a schoolboy’s nose during a series of “appalling” attacks. Richard Finch attacked the school bus driver as he picked up children at Nunnery Wood High School in Worcester. Driver Steven Frost became suspicious of 20-year-old Finch and asked him to get off the bus on May 5, 2006. As the driver pulled away, Finch, who was “shouting and swearing”, hit the emergency exit switch and jumped back on board. Gemma Goode, prosecuting, said: “The defendant spat at Mr Frost, hitting him on the shoulder. He punched him, hitting his sunglasses, causing his right eye to swell and bruise.” Finch, of Rodborough Close, Warndon, Worcester, appeared before city magistrates yesterday. He was sentenced for two ABH charges, theft, affray, two charges of criminal damage and two bail act offences. The second incident of ABH happened when Finch attacked a 16-year-old schoolboy, who cannot be identified by your Worcester News for legal reasons. The attack happened on May 8, 2006 near Chelmsford Court in Ronkswood, Worcester. Miss Goode said Finch believed the boy had been picking on his cousin. She said: “With both arms pinned he was unable to defend himself. The defendant then punched him square on the nose. He felt dizzy but managed to stay on his feet. He was shouting ‘do you know who I am? You do now’.” The GCSE student was so shaken by the attack he found it hard to concentrate during exams. Finch denied both attacks but was found guilty at a trial in his absence on Thursday, February 28. The charge of affray happened when he attacked Gary Darlow in an alleyway between Humber Road and Dart Road in Ronksood, at around 10pm on October 7, 2006, during which Mr Darlow was set upon by as many as four youths who punched and kicked him on the ground. Mr Darlow was defending his 17-year-old son as Finch shouted “I’m going to smash your face in!” A neighbour saw Mr Darlow curled up in a ball as they attacked him and she shouted and they ran off. Darlow later suffered kidney failure although this was not believed to be as a result of the attack, Miss Goode said. David Taylor, defending, said Finch now had a job, had not been in trouble for the past 18 months and had a girlfriend who was expecting their first child in December. He added: “He was drunk and acting in an appalling way. He’s ashamed of that.” Finch was given a 12-month suspended sentence suspended for 12 months, ordered to pay £250 compensation to the bus driver, £600 to the schoolboy, £100 to Mr Darlow and prosecution costs of £255. Magistrates asked for him to be supervised for 18 months and complete 100 hours of unpaid work and to attend an “enhanced thinking programme”.   more...

Past

From the Archives - April 17, 2008

100 years Ago April 18, 1908 Monday's meeting at Evesham to create or stimulate interest in agricultural co-operation was not a very enthusiastic gathering but most people have learnt not to expect too much in this direction, so there was probably little or no disappointment. Mr Yerburgh gave a very interesting address on the advantages which may be derived from combination in matters of purchase and sales and in various other agricultural subjects, and some of those present were certainly impressed with what he had to tell them. The Earl of Coventry again showed his interest in the co-operative movement by kindly taking the chair but we cannot help thinking that his speech must have made the organisers of the meeting feel rather uncomfortable. All responsible people who have to do with agricultural co-operative organisation are extremely careful to avoid any semblance of party politics and some of his lordship's remarks very nearly approached the danger zone.  more...

Dramatic story of forbidden love and heartache

RAW, distressing, steely and relentless. According to the critics, David Grindley's revival of Blackbird, at Malvern next month, has a slow-burning intensity that nags away in the memory like the mental equivalent of a toothache.' David Harrower's drama has haunted audiences since it premiered in 2005. The unsettling story, emotional in the real sense of the word, follows a 27-year-old woman, Una, who tracks down a man from her past. Fifteen years ago Una, then 12, and Ray, then 40, had an affair which ended with Ray abandoning her in a hotel. For his crime, Ray went to prison and has since attempted to rebuild his life. What shocks most is the idea that this was a love affair, rather than predatory paedophilia.  more...
