THE proposal to appropriate a chunk of common land beside the Peachfield Road now underlines the fact that this proposed development is an issue for all of us, not just the residents who live close by. Over the years, the Conservators have appeared to act in a draconian fashion against even the tiniest incursion into the land which they administer for us all. The justification for this policy in terms of thin ends of wedges can be seen by most of us as fair - but only while the principle is upheld consistently. Public authorities tread a thin line between responding to legitimately-expressed argument by minority interests and risking loss of the public's trust when there is reason for suspicion of preferential treatment. In particular, our administrators should avoid legitimising the impression that money and power can win exceptions to previously upheld rules. more...
