Powick

TWELVE ramblers from Powick, plus five dogs, set off in good weather from Eastnor Church for a four and a half mile walk across the Eastnor Estate to Ledbury and back. The path led past Eastnor Pottery, past a workshop making fake armour for the film industry and past the Landrover Experience depot. The footpath crossed open farmland and woodland on to the limestone ridge. There were few signs of Spring apart from a flock of sheep and their lambs. Several steep slopes were encountered and the ground, being porous, was dry. The route led into Conigree Wood where the Forestry Commission was managing the woodland, then down to the Ledbury by-pass by the roundabout on the Gloucester Road. A plaque commemorated the opening of the by-pass in 1989. A short walk past the Deer Park Estate led to Ledbury High Street, where the ancient Market House was admired and the variety of individual shops as opposed to supermarkets was commented on. Several walkers enjoyed their first walk up the historic Church Street to St Michael's Church before crossing the road opposite the Police Station. The path led up steeply, past yew trees, to the ridge top, and then onto open farmland with views of the Malverns and Eastnor obelisk. Suddenly Eastnor Church came into view and the path led past the school back to the car park. Joy and Phil Bunyan were thanked for leading the walk and refreshments were taken at the Malvern Hills Hotel.  more...
