What is it like to only have a birthday every four years?

THE odds of Ciaran Galvin being born on February 29, 2000, were slim. For a start, he was born in a leap year, on a day that only happens once every four years. Plus it was the turn of the century where the rules get a little more complicated and only years divisible by 400 are leap years. Hence, 2000 had the extra day but 1900 did not.  more...

Memory Lane

100 Years Ago, March 7, 1908

FIVE stolen snared rabbits turned out to be expensive meals for Albert Smith, aged 19, of Tower Hill, and James Shelley, 13, of Hanbury Terrace, Droitwich, when they appeared before the Spa Petty Sessions. The pair were accused of taking the coneys from wires set on Mr Gibbs' field in Hadzor Lane. The pair had been arrested after police had followed their footprints in the snow to a farm where evidence of the theft was found. Under the new First Offenders' Act the bench showed them leniency and let them off with payment of 18/- costs.  more...

100 Years Ago February 29 1908 THE contract price (£6,850) for improving and enlarging the Evesham public library buildings will cause considerable surprise to the burgesses, who had been led to expect that the estimate of £6,000 would not be exceeded. They, however, have the satisfaction of knowing that although the cost may be heavy, especially when it is borne in mind that it is to be expended upon an old building, that this work will be complete and will be well carried out and that in 12 months' time Evesham will have a public hall which will accommodate the many functions for which such a building is required. This need has been more than ever emphasised during the past few weeks.  more...
