100 Years Ago, February 29, 1908

THE gales which hit Bromsgrove at the weekend and again on Monday left a trail of destruction in their wake. Many trees were blown down and tiles, slates and chimney pots ripped off scores of homes. The Forest Hotel, Lickey End, had a large window blow in and John Adams had a lucky escape while walking near Dyers' Bridge in Worcester Road. Believing a loud noise to be thunder he paused just as two large trees crashed to the ground either side of him. To add to townsfolk's misery an inch of snow fell on Friday.  more...

50 years ago, March 1, 1958

WHILE much of Britain shivered or was flooded, Bromsgrove town had escaped the worst of the late winter weather. The sheltered centre had but a few inches of snow, but outlying villages - such as Lickey, Clent, Fairfield and Fockbury - where snow ploughs were brought in, had drifts of up to six feet deep. This was Bromsgrove's third snowfall since January.  more...

From the Archives - February 21, 2008

100 Years Ago February 22, 1908 THE fancy dress balls held in Evesham this week in aid of the Indian Mutiny and Crimean Veterans' Fund were very successful and will doubtless result in a very substantial sum being handed over to a most deserving object. The mayor announced that he was due to meet the Lord Mayor of London next month in reference to this fund and he hoped to take a very handsome cheque with him from the old town of Evesham, a hope which seems likely to be realised. We would remind those who have not yet subscribed that the subscription list is still open in our columns and we shall be glad to acknowledge subscriptions both large and small.  more...

Richard Taylor'S Weekly Column

February 21, 2008

AT the public meeting about the future of Lea Castle Hospital on February 13 it was unanimously resolved to pass on an additional fourth option: "Maintain services for Worcestershire patients, under the management of the Worcestershire Mental Health Partnership Trust, on the Lea Castle site but on a smaller financially viable part to meet existing requirements." This option must be seriously considered, and hopefully adopted, because 92 per cent of the current staff live nearby and their dedication and expertise should be retained for the benefit of the users of the service.  more...
