Spread a little happiness as you go by...

Having endured the first week of the fifteen weeks of disruption, traffic queues, mud and noise I feel impelled to write and say: so what? No gain without pain! We expect to change our habits and expectations when a kitchen or bathroom is renovated. There are certainly valid misgivings about the revised street layout but no-one would deny that the condition of the High Street pavements is awful, so when the work is finished we should appreciate that the town will look much better, the disruption and mess will soon fade from the memory. So, just give yourself another five minutes to get in and park, relish the novelty of a constantly changing route through the cheerful orange barriers and give the bedraggled men in bright jackets a smile!  more...

Memory Lane

100 Years Ago, January 25, 1908

THERE was disquiet in the Bromsgrove village of Catshill about the 30 or so men who, clad in dirty clothes and using filthy language, regularly congregated on certain roads to the annoyance and embarrassment of young women and children. Despite a new working men's club having been established and facilities set up for further education, it appeared the loafers were simply not interested.  more...

Past

From the Archives - January 17, 2008

100 Years Ago January 14, 1908 MR T R Albutt, of Dumbleton, writes: "The Christmas season of 1907 ended in damp, mild weather, much against the prices of cattle and poultry. Work of all kinds was very much in arrears, after the excessively wet autumn. Very little wheat and other crops have been planted in the Vale. Now we are having a very cold snap; the frost will enable the manure carting to be done, but the east wind accompanying the frost has been very trying to outlying cattle. Foreign markets rule the price for all home-grown produce. Everyone would like to see the rural population increase, but better prices will be the only means of doing so with a Government that has the Empire as its leading motto, not class legislation."  more...
