DROITWICH has welcomed a new face to help the town organise events and attract new visitors. Janet Yates has taken up her role as Wychavon District Council's new area partnership manager. Janet replaces former manager Joe Ling who helped with Droitwich's High Street regeneration project and was instrumental in starting the town's Salt Day Festival. Janet will now be responsible for co-ordinating all the activities in and around the town, including supporting the Droitwich Local Strategic Partnership (LSP). The LSP pulls together all the different partners in Droitwich, from the public and private sectors, who can work together to deliver real improvements for the town and its surrounding rural areas. Janet has been working for the last three years at Malvern Hills District Council in economic development and tourism, so has an excellent grasp of the issues facing towns and rural communities. She has also worked to support the Farmers' Markets Group and previously worked on a project to help rural businesses in Wychavon to diversify. "I'm looking forward to the challenges of this role, in particular helping to secure investment for the town, attracting visitors and enhancing the unique character of the area," she said. "I'm also looking forward to delivering real projects for Droitwich at a time when it is really needed."  more...

Cooking up success

TALENTED pupils from a Bromsgrove school were due to be rewarded for their cooking skills on Wednesday, January 16. The Rotary Club of North Worcestershire sponsored 13 students from South Bromsgrove High School, in Charford Road, who are competing in a national competition to find the young chef of the year. After completing the preliminary round, all attained a high standard and were set to receive their certificates from Rotary Club president David Butterworth. Winner, Andrew Tomkinson, and runner-up, Stacey Smith, now go through to the area final and will be hoping to compete in the national finals in London, on April 19.  more...

West Malvern

AT its meeting on Monday the Parish Council welcomed a report by County Councillor Jeremy Webb on the future of the Outdoor Education Centre. Until recently threatened with closure, the Centre's management has been granted a period of three years to become financially self-sufficient and independent of County Council subsidy. This follows a review of the original closure proposal demanded by a group of Councillors including Cllr Webb. Parish Councillors were however dismayed to learn that it was proposed to demolish and replace one of the original buildings on the site, on health and safety grounds, the fact that £40,000 had recently been spent on the existing building by the Council with a further £8,000 of expenditure planned shortly. It was resolved to write to the County Council asking for an explanation of the justification for the decision to demolish. The Parish Council also agreed an £1,750 increase for 2008/9 in the Council Tax precept, which has been unchanged for the past two years. Main reason was an anticipated substantial increase in the charge for maintenance of the (newly painted!) under a new contract due to be signed shortly. This will mean an average increase per household of less than £4 per year on the 2008/9 Council Tax.  more...
