The Changing Environment

Global Wind Systems Part 3

Climates change all the time. Subtropical and mid-latitude climates are strongly effected by the upper jet stream, a strong and high altitude wind that blow from a westerly direction in both hemispheres. "El Nino", a change in the Trade winds and Pacific currents, occurs every few years and affects the weather and climates over a large part of the world. Climates are always changing, at present we are living in an "interglacial period" an interval between the end of one ice age and the start of another. During our life time we will witness many weather patterns which are short lived. In the British Isles the weather is fickle and changeable due to the fact that we are a very small country compared with others. Britain often becomes the battle field as winds from different directions bring contrasting air masses, which produces all kinds of weather.   more...

Longdon

LAST Saturday, a fundraising event for MusicSpace was held at the Vicarage. Mary Clayton, co-ordinator for the North West Branch, explained the work of a music therapist and how children and adults with learning difficulties can benefit from the experience. She showed some interesting video clips of work undertaken in schools and hospitals. The funds raised on this occasion were to support the work at Broadgreen Hospital with the hospital's Parkinson's clinic. The work includes one-off individual music therapy sessions; blocks of regular individual music therapy sessions; providing live music in the patients' waiting area and spontaneous group music-making/singing in the patients' waiting area. In the first year of this project nearly 60 people have benefited from the Parkinsons Music Therapy Project. Funds are now urgently needed in order to continue this service which is highly valued by patients and staff at the clinic. The evening included refreshments and a raffle and raised over £200 for MusicSpace.  more...
