Your story was a terrible reminder

SIR - We were very sorry to hear about the tragic death of 27-day-old baby Zach Hartshorne (Worcester News, August 31). This is a terrible reminder that a family suffers the tragedy of a cot death nearly every day in the UK. It remains the leading cause of death for babies over one month old and there is a desperate need for more research and support for bereaved families. For a free copy of our BabyZone booklet, giving details of our research-based infant care advice, or for support of other information, readers may call our helpline on 020 7233 2090 or visit our website at www.fsid.org.uk STACEY KERR Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths.  more...

Worse footprint

I HAVE recently returned to Malvern to find that both the bus services that serve our area have been severely reduced. The "town" service has been reduced to a derisory two hour frequency, which is a disgraceful level of service for a large section of a town of close to 30,000 inhabitants. In addition the once high quality 44 service to Worcester, which for most of the day had a 15 minute interval, has been split into alternating loops, that in effect only offer a 30 minute service for a large portion of the town.  more...

On your bikes

Well done to Malvern Hills District Council for taking advantage of the Tour of Britain going through the centre of Malvern to put on a Get Cycling' event at the weekend. We can't all be, or want to be, professional racing cyclists, but many of us could get on a bike to pop along to the local shops or go a mile or two to work or school. OK, it's not the flattest area and some roads are unpleasant at peak times, so a bit of extra help would be useful.  more...

Memory Lane

100 Years Ago, September 28, 1907

A REPORT into domestic sanitary conditions in the rural Bromsgrove villages of Fairfield and Bournheath made disturbing reading. The report, compiled by the rural district council, found that there were 70 house in the two parishes and of these 53 had privvies, 45 cesspits and three ashpits. The majority of privvies were dilapidated and the cesspit, in some cases simply open holes in the ground or roughly covered by boards, were little better. Dumbwells too were found to be inadequate and several homes had no drainage whatsoever, while leaking sewage was widespread. The chief water supply was from shallow wells which collected only surface water, which was often contaminated by effluent.  more...

The time and place are not yet fixed, but they will be announced in next week's issue. It is to be hoped that the event will be favoured with fine weather, and there will be a large turn-out of spectators as a compliment, not only to Sir Henry Grey, but to the Chief Officer and men of the brigade, who render such excellent and valuable services on behalf of the public.
