Wyre Forest Flashback

September - 100 years ago

The Shuttle described an annual excursion to Holt Fleet by the workforce of Messrs Cooke Brothers, carpet manufacturers of Worcester Cross works Kidderminster. A start was made at 1.30 pm but unfortunately a heavy storm caused them to shelter at The Bridge Inn, Stourport. Undeterred, the party started out again after 45 minutes, but another storm drove them into The Hundred House at Great Witley. After some considerable time spent "singing and dancing" the party set off again to finally reach their destination, The Wharf Hotel at Holt Fleet, at 5 pm. There then followed a meeting chaired by Councillor William Cooke, and, after "a good run home", including a short stay at The Mitre, the party arrived back at 10.45 pm The article does not describe the state of the participants upon their return! Mr John Nicholls of Commercial Buildings had attended a lavish day out given by the Cunard Steamship Company, for invited guests to inspect their latest magnificent liner, the SS Lusitania.  more...

Under the title "Midnight Skiffle in Beauty Spot", the Shuttle reported that residents were angered by an all-night skiffle party in Habberley Valley held by teenagers, "many of whom were dressed in gaudy sweaters and tight slacks". A new women's record of 40.41 seconds for the Shelsley Walsh hill-climb, was set up by Miss Roberta Cowell, of Twickenham, the former RAF pilot who six years previously had changed her sex. A meeting of the Hartlebury Parish Council was held to decide how the rotting branches of the ancient Mitre Oak tree at Crossway Green could be sawn away without damaging the rest of the tree. The tree, believed to be 1,000 years old, is said to have been the place where St.Augustine met with the Welsh chieftains. Kidderminster Harriers were beaten 2-0 by Weymouth and Bedford in successive games at Aggborough and had now played seven games and 630 minutes without scoring. In the "Carpet Trade Notes" column, it was stated that the local labour force in the trade had gone up by 200 in the last three months and now stood at 10,500.  more...
