100 Years Ago August 10, 1907 Beautiful weather favoured the sale of work and garden fete which was held in the grounds of the Manor House, Cleeve Prior, on Saturday afternoon in aid of the fund for the restoration of the church, and there was an excellent attendance. The sale was opened at three o'clock by Lady Barbara Yeatman-Biggs, wife of the Bishop of the Diocese, and in calling upon her to declare the sale open the Vicar (Rev A C Style) in a short speech said he was pleased to see so many assembled there that afternoon to welcome Lady Barbara, who had so kindly come all the way from Hartlebury Castle to open the sale, and he was sure they all appreciated her kindness. They hoped that day to realise the amount of £90, which was still required to clear them from debt.  more...

THE blind and partially sighted can now get hold of the summer edition of Bromsgrove District Council's residents' magazine on audio disc. The narrative version of Together Bromsgrove comes in a double CD pack and, as well as covering the news pages of the publication, it also includes the pull-out summary of the annual report. Play lasts 90 minutes, but tips on how to skip through the track are also given to enable listeners to go to the sections of their choice. Groups and organisations who support blind and partially sighted people can pick up a copy from the Bromsgrove Customer Service Centre, in School Drive, or by calling 01527 881651.  more...

Crop field fire

FIRE crews from Droitwich Spa and Bromsgrove were called out to deal with a blaze in a Hanbury crop field last Wednesday. The crews were also joined by an appliance from Evesham at Lower Goosehill Farm, Hanbury, at 3.55pm to help extinguish a fire in standing crops. A spokesman for Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service said: "The fire was not that large and it only took around 15 minutes to get under control." Firefighters used backpacks and beaters around the edge of the field to make sure the fire did not spread.  more...
