POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a purse was stolen from a woman's handbag while she was shopping in a mother and baby store in Bromsgrove High Street. The woman was in Mothercare last Thursday when an Asian woman, believed to be in her 20s and wearing a dark anorak and jeans, brushed against her. Shortly afterwards the woman realised her black purse, with red edging, was missing. It contained £30, a library card and a prescription. After reporting the missing purse, a member of staff chased after the suspect, but lost her. Police are now examining CCTV footage of the incident. PC Stan Baker, Bromsgrove police's crime reduction officer, advised shoppers to be vigilant adding: "They should be particularly careful if someone tries to distract them, engage them in conversation, or brushes against them." BROMSGROVE firefighters wore breathing apparatus as they put out a house fire on Monday. Two crews were called out at 5.50pm and on arrival saw the house in Stoney Hill Close, Bromsgrove, heavily smoke-logged. Firefighters forced entry into the house, before putting out the blaze, which was caused accidentally after a cooker was left on. There was significant damage to the kitchen and the house was damaged by the smoke. No one was trapped and there were no reported injuries. A spokesman for Bromsgrove fire station said: "We would advise people to regularly check fire alarms. We offer free fire safety checks, where we fit alarms and check for fire hazards."
